Best Job Portals in the UK (2026): Where to Actually Apply

The UK is English-native and, since Brexit, it hires globally through the Skilled Worker visa. So if you are applying from abroad, the single most useful filter is not "which board has the most jobs" - it is "which employers are licensed to sponsor a visa." This guide covers both: the general boards everyone uses, and the sponsorship-aware portals that decide whether you can actually take the role.

The UK job market has an advantage most of Europe does not: it runs in English. There is no language barrier to clear, no localised board you cannot read. That makes the general boards genuinely useful from day one - but it also means competition is fierce and you cannot lean on "English-speaking jobs" as a filter the way you would in Germany or Sweden.

For international candidates, the real dividing line is sponsorship. So we will start with the official portal, run through the big general boards, then spend most of our time on the part that actually decides your search: which sites surface licensed visa sponsors.

Start Here: The Official Portal

The UK government runs its own free employment service: Find a job, at gov.uk/find-a-job, operated by the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP). It carries public-sector roles, council jobs, NHS-support positions and a steady stream of private listings, and you can search it for sponsorship terms.

It will not be the prettiest board you use, but it is official, free and unusually low-noise - the listings are real and the duplicates are fewer than on the commercial aggregators. One important caveat: Northern Ireland uses a separate service, not Find a job, so if you are targeting Belfast or Derry, search the NI-specific portal as well.

Why start official: a government board has no incentive to pad results with sponsored or recycled listings. Use Find a job to anchor your search, then layer the commercial boards on top for reach.

The Big General Boards

These are the high-volume boards where most UK roles eventually appear. None of them filter for sponsorship by default, but they carry the breadth, so you will use at least one or two.

  • Indeed UK (uk.indeed.com) - the volume leader. More listings than anywhere else, across every sector. Use the search bar to add "skilled worker visa" or "visa sponsorship" to cut it down.
  • Reed (reed.co.uk) - one of the longest-running UK boards, heavily recruiter-fed, strong across all industries. A share of roles are from sponsoring employers, but it is not labelled cleanly.
  • LinkedIn (linkedin.com/jobs) - the strongest pool for tech, fintech and white-collar roles, and the largest sponsor-tagged set of any general platform. Its "visa sponsorship" filter is imperfect but a useful starting point.
  • Totaljobs (totaljobs.com) - broad generalist board, good for admin, sales, engineering and logistics.
  • CV-Library (cv-library.co.uk) - another large aggregator, stronger on trades, engineering, logistics and admin.

The trade-off with all five is noise: sponsored posts, duplicates and stale listings sit alongside the real ones, and you have to dig into each description to learn whether the employer can sponsor you. That is exactly the problem the next section solves.

Best Portals for Visa-Sponsorship Candidates

This is the section that matters most if you are applying from outside the UK. The Skilled Worker visa requires a job offer from a licensed sponsor - an employer the Home Office has approved to hire from abroad. No licence, no sponsorship, no matter how good a fit you are. So your goal is to spend your time only on roles that can actually result in a visa.

Three things do this far better than scrolling a general board:

  • UK Visa Jobs / visajobs.uk (ukvisajobs.com) - a board that lists only roles from licensed sponsors, by design. Every result is, in principle, a job that can sponsor you. This is the single highest-signal place to start, spanning NHS and health, tech, engineering and hospitality.
  • NHS Jobs (jobs.nhs.uk) - the NHS is the most reliable large-scale sponsoring employer in the UK, and the Health and Care Worker visa route is well-trodden. If you work in health or care, this single board may carry more genuinely sponsorable roles than every general board combined.
  • Indeed UK and LinkedIn "visa sponsorship" filters - imperfect but useful for breadth. Add a sponsorship search term, then verify each employer manually.

And the non-negotiable step, whatever board you found the role on: cross-check the employer against the gov.uk Register of Licensed Sponsors. It is a free, public list of every organisation licensed to sponsor a Skilled Worker visa. If the company is not on it, they cannot sponsor you - so check before you invest an hour in the application.

The workflow: find a role - any board - then search the company in the gov.uk Register of Licensed Sponsors. Two minutes there saves you from applying to roles that were never going to work out for a visa. A tool that flags sponsoring employers automatically removes that step entirely.

Industry-Specific & Startup Boards

Beyond the generalists, a few niche boards are worth a direct look depending on your field.

  • CWJobs (cwjobs.co.uk) - the established UK IT and tech board: software, data, cyber and cloud roles. Also a practical route into Aberdeen oil-and-gas tech roles.
  • Welcome to the Jungle (uk.welcometothejungle.com, formerly Otta) - startup and scale-up roles in tech, product and design, with much richer company profiles than a typical board.
  • Wellfound (wellfound.com) - early-stage startup roles, engineering-heavy. Good for finding companies before they post anywhere mainstream.

Worth knowing: smaller startups are less likely to hold a sponsor licence than large employers, so if you need a visa, run any startup role through the sponsor register before you get attached to it.

UK-Specific Tips

A few things that are particular to applying in the UK and easy to get wrong if you are coming from another market:

  • Use a 2-page CV with no photo. The UK standard is two pages maximum, no headshot, no date of birth, no marital status. A photo or a US-style one-pager will read as off-key. If you are unsure how a UK CV differs from a US resume, our CV vs resume guide covers it.
  • Understand the Skilled Worker visa and the Certificate of Sponsorship. A licensed sponsor issues you a Certificate of Sponsorship (CoS) before you apply for the visa. No employer can do this without a sponsor licence - so the licence, not the job ad, is what unlocks the route.
  • Check the salary thresholds. The Skilled Worker route has a general minimum salary plus an occupation-specific going rate. Lower thresholds apply for new entrants, shortage occupations and some health and education roles. Always confirm the current figure for your occupation code on gov.uk - the numbers move.
  • Check the official sponsor register before applying. The gov.uk Register of Licensed Sponsors is the source of truth. Search the company there before you spend time on the application - it is the fastest way to rule out roles that cannot sponsor you.

How to Search Them All at Once

Put together, an efficient UK search means running Find a job, one or two general boards, a sponsorship-specific portal, and the gov.uk sponsor register - and then de-duplicating the overlap yourself. Doing that by hand is the chore that makes people give up after a week.

That is the work LumiCV's UK job search is built to remove. LumiCV searches EURES, the gov.uk Find a job service and company career pages together, scores each role against your CV, and flags visa-sponsoring employers - so instead of opening fifty listings to learn which ones can sponsor you, you see it at a glance. If you want the wider European picture too, our pillar guide on how to find all EU jobs from one place covers the same approach across the continent.

One search, the official UK sources plus career pages, ranked against your CV, with the sponsorship signal surfaced for you. That is the difference between applying to two hundred roles and applying to the twenty that can actually hire you.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best job site in the UK?

For sheer volume, Indeed UK is the leader - it carries more listings than any other board. LinkedIn is strongest for tech, fintech and white-collar roles, while Reed and Totaljobs are the established generalist boards. The best site depends on your goal: if you need visa sponsorship, a licensed-sponsor board like UK Visa Jobs or NHS Jobs will save more time than any general board.

What is the official UK government job portal?

Find a job at gov.uk/find-a-job, run by the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP). It is free, carries public-sector, council and NHS-support roles, and you can search it for sponsorship. Note that Northern Ireland uses a separate service rather than Find a job.

Which UK job sites show visa sponsorship?

UK Visa Jobs and visajobs.uk list only roles from licensed sponsors, so every result can in principle sponsor a Skilled Worker visa. NHS Jobs (jobs.nhs.uk) is the most reliable single sponsoring employer for health and care roles. On Indeed UK and LinkedIn you can add a "visa sponsorship" or "skilled worker visa" search term, but always cross-check the employer against the gov.uk Register of Licensed Sponsors.

How do I know if a UK employer can sponsor my visa?

Check the gov.uk Register of Licensed Sponsors - a public, free list of every organisation the Home Office has licensed to sponsor Skilled Worker visas. Search the company name there before you apply. If they are not on the register, they cannot sponsor you, no matter what the job ad implies.

What is the Skilled Worker visa salary threshold?

The Skilled Worker visa has a general minimum salary (around £38,700 since the 2024 rules, with the going rate for your specific occupation applying on top) plus lower thresholds for new entrants, shortage occupations and certain health and education roles. Thresholds change, so confirm the current figure for your occupation code on gov.uk before relying on it.

Search every UK source in one place.

LumiCV searches EURES, the gov.uk Find a job service and company career pages together, scores each role against your CV, and flags visa-sponsoring employers. One search, every source.
