About the Global Talent Stream

The Global Talent Stream (GTS) is Canada's fast-track work-permit pathway for high-skilled tech roles. Under Category A (referred by designated partners) and Category B (occupations on the Global Talent Occupations List — including software, ML, data engineering, and DevOps), Service Canada targets work-permit issuance in 10 business days. Recent actuals have slipped slightly (~12 business days as of early 2026) but it remains the fastest route into Canada for in-demand tech.

The scheme is LMIA-supported (positive Labour Market Impact Assessment required) — meaning the employer must demonstrate active recruitment of Canadian / PR candidates. Most major Canadian tech employers (Shopify, Cohere, Lightspeed) have GTS infrastructure in place; smaller employers may not. GTS pairs naturally with Express Entry: arrive on GTS, accrue Canadian work experience, transition to PR via CEC.

CV tip for Global Talent Stream applicants

For GTS applicants: position relocation timeline aggressively — "available to start within 30 days, GTS-eligible role". 2-week processing is a real advantage.
