About the Kennismigrant (Highly Skilled Migrant)
The Dutch kennismigrant (Highly Skilled Migrant) scheme is the dominant work-permit pathway for non-EU tech professionals in the Netherlands. Sponsorship is restricted to employers on the IND's public Register of Recognised Sponsors (Openbaar register erkende referenten kennismigranten). Salary thresholds for 2026 (gross, excluding the 8% holiday allowance): €5,942/month for applicants aged 30+, €4,357/month for under-30s, and €3,122/month under the reduced criterion, which covers recent graduates and permits applied for during an orientation year.
The IND must decide within 90 days, and applications through a recognised sponsor are usually quicker. The permit is renewable up to 5 years. The 30% ruling tax benefit historically paired with kennismigrant but has been partially phased out — confirm current eligibility with IND.nl or a Dutch immigration advisor before relying on it.
