About the H-1B Visa Sponsorship

The H-1B is the dominant US work-visa pathway for foreign tech professionals. Annual cap: 65,000 regular + 20,000 advanced-degree slots, allocated by lottery in March (the FY2027 registration window opens 4–19 March 2026). From 27 February 2026 selection is wage-weighted — each registration gets 1–4 entries based on its DOL wage level, advantaging higher-paying petitions. The $215 registration fee remains; a separate $100,000 proclamation fee (introduced September 2025) applies to new petitions requiring consular processing abroad, but not to in-US change-of-status petitions.

Valid for 3 years initially, renewable to 6. Dual intent allowed: H-1B holders can pursue employment-based green cards (EB-2 / EB-3) in parallel. Filing requires an employer petition, a Labor Condition Application certified by the DOL, and the role must qualify as a 'specialty occupation' (typically requires bachelor's degree). The most consequential US visa for international tech talent — and historically the hardest to obtain due to lottery odds (~25–30% in recent years).

CV tip for H-1B applicants

State visa status explicitly: "US citizen / Green Card holder / EAD / H-1B holder / H-1B-cap-exempt / requires sponsorship". US recruiters screen on this in 6 seconds.
